It´s a symbol of faith which has totally no religious meaning. Most parts in religion communities are in competition/ rivalry with other religions because of their history or their history spelling. That´s why religion often has a people seperating effect and it also offers threadbare reasons for violent conflicts, for me a contradiction to the peaceful wannabe-image of main religions. The real reason for such conflicts mostly has an economical and power greedy nature.
